New numbers show Netflix, followed by Presto leading SVOD battle
NEW data has revealed who is winning the streaming wars in Australia. Is it Netflix, Presto or Stan?
LEAKED new data shows the state of the Australian streaming market between Netflix, Foxtel’s Presto and Fairfax’s Stan nearly two months after Netflix launched in Australia.
According to the data produced by research company Experian Hitwise and published by The Australian, since launching, the US streaming service has received more than double the hits than that of its Australian rivals, with its closest competitor being ABC’s iView.
What’s perhaps most interesting about the data is that Netflix’s surge to the top occured on Day 1, with more than 475,000 visits to the service.
Catch up services are proving to be more popular than the local streaming offerings, with ABC iView, Plus7 and TenPlay all recording significantly more than Presto and Stan.
Presto received a slight bump after the launch of Netflix and thanks to a few promotions by Telstra, one of its parent companies. At this stage it looks like Stan is flatlining in last place, however the Fairfax owned service has questioned the figures, stating that the data didn’t take note of the sub-domain where Stan hosts its plays.
The data also conflicts with the 200,000 gross subscribers that Stan announced it has, as of last week. That number doesn’t split the number of paying subscribers with those still on their one-month trial.
The stats also offer a glimpse at Australia’s streaming habits, showing peaks by both Netflix, Presto and iVew ocurring on the Easter long weekend.
