Canada is the only country to secure streaming rights for Star Wars: The Force Awakens
THE new Star Wars film will be coming to Netflix, but before you start celebrating, we have some bad news. Australia’s been ripped off.
EIGHT months after it leaves the cinema, the force will awaken on Netflix with the highly-anticipated Star Wars movie being added to the streaming service.
If the very thought of this brings a delightful smile to your face, you should look away now because we are about to shatter your dreams.
At present, Canada is the only region of Netflix to secure the streaming rights for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
According to report from Variety, “the reason Netflix will be able to offer the much-anticipated movie in Canada next year — and not in the US or anywhere else — has to do with the timing of when Disney’s pay-TV distribution deals were up for grabs.”
While US Netflix does have a content deal with Disney, it doesn’t commence until 2016.
This means the latest flick in the Star Wars franchise is not included as it will be released in December this year — making it fall under Disney’s current output deal US cable channel Starz.
Curious to find out how this affects Australian Netflix subscribers, news.com.au asked our likelihood of securing the streaming rights for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
We were advised by a spokesman there was no news as of yet, but we would remain updated if any were to break.
While this didn’t sound too promising, backroom negotiations happening with Netflix and Disney keep the hope alive.
“[The rights are] an ongoing discussion,” Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings told Business Insider.
All we can really do is hope for the force is with Australia, so we can binge-watch the new movie in all its glory.
