THE next generation of gaming has landed but you may still be scratching your head over whether you should buy the Xbox One or PlayStation 4? With over a million units sold in 24-hours, we look at some of the coolest features of the PS4 including some you didn't know existed.

Taking over the TV for a Call of Duty marathon does have its problems if other people want to watch TV. Worry not, as the PS4 lets you continue playing on a PS Vita. It'll mirror the same content on your big screen to your handheld. Toilet break, without disrupting your gaming? No worries. The Vita will also turn on your console, too.

Android and iOS smartphones and tablets can be integrated into gameplay. These can be used as second screens on some games and also be used to control the console including acting as a keyboard, so no more tedious typing via the DualShock controller.

The ingenious idea of integrating a speaker into the controller offers that bit extra when it comes to immersive gaming. It may only be small, but hearing footsteps or gunshots only inches away has us on edge. While at a PS4 event, Sony keenly spoke about how they wait to see how developers take advantage of this feature.

That light bar beaming from the front of the controller doesn't just look super awesome, it also serves some useful purposes. It can change colour to display which player you are (no more numbering) as well as be a visual indicator for your health status in games.

For us, our gaming volumes are either at house party highs or barely audible night-time lows. With a headphone socket built into the controller you can now game away day or night without annoying anyone. And the best news is, unlike the Xbox One, this port isn't proprietary. It's a standard 3.5mm jack that'll accept any normal set of headphones. Good job, Sony.

Let's face it, some game soundtracks are truly awful. Rectify this by using Sony's Music Unlimited streaming audio service, which operates similarly to Spotify, and allows you play your choice of music in the background of games. And it won't take over commentary or sound effects either, as volumes are automatically adjusted.

While the PS4 Eye camera doesn't come bundled, there is a free, pre-installed, mini game called The PlayRoom for when you do buy one. This game transports you into an augmented reality world where your living room is overrun with mini robots that you can knock, kick and flick around. Good fun for five minutes.

Part of the PlayRoom experience, those with tablets can download the companion PS4 app and design objects on a paint-like interface and instantly 'flick' that object into the screen. We saw a Sony rep design a giant duck on the tablet which was then replicated in 3D on the screen for us to play with.

With the PS3, controller charging only occurred when the system was on. Now, controllers will be juiced-up when in standby mode.

There's no anticlimax like rushing home with a new game only to wait what seems an eon for it to install. A new play-as-you-install feature does exactly as it says on the tin and by the time you've worked out the tutorial level, the whole game will be ready to go. Ta-dah!

The PlayStation 4 will be released in Australia November 29 from A$550.
