Samsung G7 Odyssey review: ‘Ridiculous’ toy every gamer needs
It might just be the craziest piece of tech launched this year but it’s insanely powerful, accelerates gaming and comes with added curves.
The pandemic has a lot more of us spending time at home, which has seen an incredible rise in the number of people gaming. So how can you get in on the action and create your ultimate gaming set-up?
Well, I think I’ve got a product you need to get your eyes across. Samsung has launched some of the craziest gaming monitors I’ve ever seen – the Odyssey G9 and G7. These monitors are making waves in the gaming community, as not only are they insanely powerful, but they have ridiculously curved screens.
Get this, the panel has a curvature of 1000R! OK, if you’re not across this jargon it will mean absolutely nothing to you, so I’ll break it down.
The ‘R’ in 1000R stands for radius and the 1000 represents 1000mm. So, 1000R represents the radius of a circle this monitor could form. I’ll be honest, I’m barely following this myself but just picture a banana, this thing is curvy!

In fact, there’s never been such powerful monitors with such dramatic curvatures until this year so it’s a big deal.
Up until now it’s been more common for high powered curved monitors to come in sizes of 1800R or 3000R and you’d be surprised at the stark difference in their shapes.
The Odyssey G7 monitor comes in two different sizes, 27” and 32” (and for those who want to go big or go home, I’ll also note the gargantuan 49” Odyssey G9 model).
It was the Odyssey G7 32” monitor that showed up at my doorstep and oh, my, goodness, the box barely fit inside my doorway.
On the other hand, setting this up was a breeze. You just have to attach it to its stand and plug in some cables. The monitor has two USB ports, two display ports, HDMI port and a headphone jack on the back, as well as some great in-built cable management in the stand.
Once I had it set up and on my desk I was blown away. The curve on the Odyssey G7 is supposed to match the human eye’s field of view, so you feel practically encapsulated by your screen if you find the sweet spot sitting in front of it.
This would lose all its charm, however, if the specs weren’t good. The monitor has a 240Hz refresh rate, which means you get really smooth graphics while gaming, eliminating ghosting. It has an incredibly fast response time of 1ms to keep up with those speedy mouse movements.

The monitor also has a QLED vivid display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 (1440p), which sits between 1080p HD and 4K resolution. We haven’t really seen this before in a curved monitor together with all the above specs.
It was honestly quite strange to get used to such a curved screen, but I was taken aback by how good everything looked while gaming. In fact I feel like I need to improve my gaming skills to be worthy of such a display.
My only drawback here is that it didn’t suit as much for professional uses like video editing. When using such a curvy screen things do feel strangely stretched out. It may not be for everyone but as far as gaming monitors go, it delivers on value for money - coming in at $999.
This monitor was made specifically with hardcore gaming in mind, for those who want to become completely immersed and Samsung has done well on this one.
