SingStar is making a comeback on PS4

SONY is finally bringing Singstar to the PlayStation 4, but doing away with the traditional microphone and replacing it with your phone. Good idea?

SONY announced today that SingStar is coming to the PlayStation 4 later this year.

Over on the PlayStation Blog, SingStar game director Chris Bruce revealed SingStar is coming to Sony’s newest console, along with the news of a SingStar app that allows people to use their smartphones (and tablets) as a microphone. As such, a separate microphone won’t be needed to play SingStar, with the app available on smartphones and tablets and compatible with PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

Bruce also talked about what players can expect in the future with SingStar. “We’re ... working hard to optimise the social experience of SingStar by making it even easier to share the best bits of your night on Twitter and Facebook straight from the game,” he wrote. “With an improved scoring system, you can also build up your XP and get rewarded for game activity or challenge your friends online and entertain them with your renditions of your favourite songs.”

On the European version of the PlayStation Blog, an upcoming boxed release of the series in European markets called SingStar: Ultimate Party was talked about. To be released for PS3 and PS4, SingStar: Ultimate Party collects 30 SingStar tracks, and offers a feature set similar to (if not identical to) this digital SingStar release, including the use of smartphones as a microphone, social network SingStar sharing, online multiplayer challenges, and SingStore downloading of additional tracks.

Today marks the 10-year anniversary of the SingStar franchise, which has sold 26 million copies worldwide. Bruce promises more details about SingStar to come in the months ahead, but for now, there isn’t a release date for the PlayStation 4 edition.
