AFTER all the commotion around sexism in video games, how has this been able to happen?

A new video game set for release on PlayStation’s virtual reality system is allowing people to sexually assault female characters.

The title in question is Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 from Japanese developer Koei Tecmo Games.

While it’s not uncommon for video games from eastern countries to be lost in translation for western audiences, it’s safe to say this new VR game has crossed the line in a big way.

The premise of the previous games in the Dead or Alive franchise has been fighting with scantily clad women in exotic locations.

Yes, this is controversial in its own right, but people have never been too offended with the concept.

In fact, the game has even had a spin-off movie starring Australia’s own Holly Valance.

However, the latest game in the franchise takes things too far by proudly endorsing rape culture.

A video from Gamer.ne.jp demonstrated the disgusting feature, which allows players to continually touch a woman who is verbally protesting.

Watching the player touch the character’s body with the PlayStation 4’s motion controller is highly awkward and the translation of her protests only make things more disturbing.

“She tells him ‘I don’t like it’, and uses a word that directly translates to ‘bad’ that is often used to flatly deny permission,” translated Engadget.

Despite obviously making the character uncomfortable, the player is able to persist.

With the world of video games already highly criticised for its lack of diversity and misogynistic attitude, this is the last thing the industry needs.

It is unclear if this version of the game will be released in the west, but it will be interesting to see if Sony intervene and remove the feature as the game, which is scheduled for release the same day PlayStation VR.
