A commando’s work is never done, which is good news for fans of military action games — especially with the news there’s another anticipated one on the way.

Publisher Ubisoft have announced the next game in their Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon series, entitled Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, will be released for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 4.

Shifting the free-fire zone from Bolivia to a completely fictional (and therefore unable to be part of a minor diplomatic incident) island of Aurora, a high-tech drone research facility which has suddenly dropped off the grid, the game looks to be following the same enjoyable style as its predecessor, with a lot of guns, vehicles, explosions and gadgets on offer.

Players will reprise their role from Wildlands as Nomad, the leader of the elite US Special Forces squad known as The Ghosts, and will discover a rogue Ghost unit known as The Wolves have gone rogue and taken over Aurora, turning the island’s high-tech equipment into deadly weapons for reasons which haven’t been elaborated on at this point but would almost certainly not be out of place in a Tom Clancy novel.

Fans of the popular series have something to look forward to.

Actor Jon Bernthal — best known for his roles as The Punisher in the Netflix TV series of the same name and as Shane Walsh in The Walking Dead — will reprise his role as Lt Colonel Cole D Walker, who is now leading the rogue Wolves and will be the story’s main antagonist.

Unlike Wildlands, where the Ghosts made a conventional insertion into the operations zone, in Breakpoint their helicopters are shot down while undertaking reconnaissance of the island and the commandos find themselves on the back foot, injured, without backup and being hunted by The Wolves as they work to defeat the rogue elements and regain control of the island.

According to Ubisoft, “Steep slopes, accumulating injuries, and fatigue are new challenges for players to tackle as they test their survival skills in the varied terrains of Auroa”.

“Players will enjoy total freedom to accomplish their missions and have plenty of tactical options and tools at their disposal, including a set of new military features,” the official game announcement said.

“They will be able to carry enemies and teammates’ bodies, blend into their environment with prone camo and set up camp with teammates in the bivouac to manage equipment, change classes, and fine-tune their strategies.

“They will also be able to choose among thousands of customisation combinations to create their perfect Ghost, and keep their character and progression through the game in both the main campaign and Player-Vs-Player (mode), available at launch.”

The developers have also promised plenty of post-launch content and updates, including new stories, new character classes and features — along with endgame content in the form of raids.

The official trailer certainly promises a lot of action so fans of Ghost Recon: Wildlands (myself included) have something to look forward to in October.
