Microsoft’s Sea of Thieves set for new update

THE popular pirate adventure game is getting a significant free update this month, bringing skeleton crews, a three-player ship and more.

MICROSOFT’S multiplayer pirate adventure Sea of Thieves is getting a significant free update on July 31, bringing skeleton crews and a three-player ship to the oceans in Cursed Sails.

Executive producer Joe Neate said the free update would be available to both players who own the game outright — either on PC or Xbox — or are accessing it via Xbox Game Pass.

“Players will now be able to battle terrifying new skeleton ships, set sail in the new three-player Brigantine ship and form alliances with other players to take on bigger challenges and share greater rewards,” he said.

Also addressing one of the issues with the launch game — that there’s basically nothing to do — the update includes a time-limited campaign.

Mr Neate said the campaign would be available for three weeks and involve skeleton ships terrorising outposts and challenging pirates to high-seas battles.

Notably, a “story-driven side quest will also allow players to investigate the source of the skeleton scourge”, he said.

He said those who missed the boat on campaign would not forfeit the new additions to the game, however.

“Don’t worry, if you’re unable to take part in the time-limited campaign, all the features introduced with this campaign will remain in the Sea of Thieves world for everyone to see and experience,” he said.
