Elly Awesome’s review of PS5 and its ‘thrilling’ feature

A tech reviewer has revealed the “exciting” new feature of the PS5 controller that is very different to what we’re used to.

XBOX X Series VS PlayStation 5: Which console comes out on top?

REVIEW

After my pre-order way back in August, I have finally received my PlayStation 5!

Demand has been incredibly high since launch, so much so that I missed out on the first release in November but I’ve been incredibly lucky that my order made it into the second batch, arriving just before Christmas.

For everyone else, sadly, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to get your hands on a PS5 until early 2021.

If you’re looking to grab a PS5 though, while you wait, you might want to decide which version you’ll be purchasing. There are two options – the digital edition, which retails for $599.95, or the more expensive disc edition coming in at $749.95.

I chose the digital edition as I’ve found myself buying hard copies of games less and less over the years, however, you might want to consider the disc edition so that you can buy discounted or second hand games on disc. More importantly, the disc drive is also an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive – which is handy if you need a DVD player to watch movies.

In terms of the console itself, you’ve probably heard, it’s pretty huge! As long as you can make some room though, it’s a unique piece of hardware that runs quietly and is insanely powerful. I love its unique and futuristic look, which makes it hard for visitors to miss.

However, the most exciting part about the console happens to be the controller. Sony’s new PS5 DualSense wireless controller is next level. They’ve adjusted look and feel from the previous PS4 controller, which in my opinion is now much more comfortable.

Though it’s the inside where things have really been taken up a notch.

The controller now has incredible haptic feedback features, adaptive triggers and motion sensors, which means it provides unique vibrations and rumbles depending on the game you’re playing.

Sony shows this off with its included game Astro’s Playroom, which is also the perfect homage to PlayStation itself. Astro’s World is a platformer-style game where you control Astro, a little robot-like creature, as he navigates through levels sprinkled with PlayStation paraphernalia.

As soon as you jump into the game you notice the impressive differences this controller makes when gaming, compared to any other controller on the market. For example, when you move Astro around you can ‘feel’ the ‘texture’ on which he’s walking, i.e. there are different types of haptic feedback depending on whether you’re walking on glass, sand or dirt. Or when you smash an object you can feel it break, and again, the vibration varies based on the item you’re breaking.

It’s difficult to explain just how thrilling the new controller is, you’ll have to take my word for it that it’s very different to what you’re used to – in a good way! It’s now my favourite thing to demo to guests, as it’s an all new experience for everyone who hasn’t got their hands on a PS5 yet.

Unfortunately, the controller’s awesome haptics aren’t as noticeable in launch titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales, which is an awesome action-packed game that I’ve been obsessed with. Though I can imagine as more game developers use the controller’s abilities in their game’s coding, next-gen games will become more and more immersive on the PS5.

There are still so many games yet to launch for the PS5, so don’t stress about missing out, I’m still keenly waiting for Kena: Bridge of Spirits and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, which won’t be released until 2021.

So keep your eyes peeled for the next PS5 pre-orders so you too can join in on the action. So far, it’s been worth every penny.
