Will the enormous success of Pokemon Go lead to a GoT version?

WITH the enormous success of Pokemon Go, a casual remark by one of its creators has got fans excited about a Game of Thrones version.

WHILE the world is enveloped in Pokemon mania, a new idea has captured the imagination of avid smartphone gamers.

Fans of Game of Thrones are hoping Westeros might provide the setting for the next big augmented reality smartphone game.

Nintendo partnered with Niantic Labs to create the app that has quickly become a cultural sensation — and all it took was an off-the-cuff remark from one of the people behind Pokemon Go to set the internet into overdrive.

The head of marketing for Pokemon Go at Niantic Labs, Archit Bhargava, recently expressed his desire to see a similar concept applied to the popular TV show.

“My personal fantasy is like a Game of Thrones game where Westeros is mapped out on Earth and you join House Stark or whatever,” he told GameSpot.

The comment was made earlier in the month during the launch of Pokemon Go in Sydney, but on the back of the enormous success of the game, it now seems very conceivable that similar style games could follow suit.

Obviously an agreement would need to be reached with the rights holders of the HBO series in order to create a GoT spin-off, but fans are now dreaming of Pokemon Go style of game based on the world created by George R.R. Martin.

Niantic Labs is responsible for another location-based augmented reality game called Ingress which divides players into opposing factions, so it’s easy to imagine a GoT themed version in which Starks or the Lannisters are pitted against each other in a real-world territorial battle played out on the participants’ smartphones.

Given that Pokemon Go has added $A11.8 billion to the market value of Nintendo in the past week, maybe we’ll see a rash of games trying to emulate that success.

And if the internet is anything to go by, maybe the Game of Thrones world is a good place to start.
