Game Boy turns 25, these are our five favourite games
THE Nintendo Game Boy just turned 25. So we take a trip down memory lane and remember some of our favourite games. How many did you play?
ON APRIL 21, 1989, Nintendo released a grey brick. A grey brick that displayed a mixture of grey and black pixels on this weird green background.
By today’s standards, it was by no means slick, nor was it powerful. But it started a gaming revolution. This grey brick was the Nintendo Game Boy.
It wasn’t the first handheld gaming console, but it certainly was the first that achieved mass success.
A quarter of a century on, the gaming industry is one of the biggest on the planet, and the Game Boy certainly helped with that.
Pokemon, Mario and Zelda all became household names, so let’s take a look back at all of the games that we loved playing on the good old Game Boy.
The top selling game for the Game Boy (which may have been because it was bundled with the Game Boy in America) Tetris still goes down as one of the most played games of all time.
Who knew that a game that required you to slot blocks into place could be so fun?
These games started an absolute phenomenon that lingers today. Your quest to become a Pokemon Master took hours of your time, catching Pokemon, fighting gym battles and becoming the Pokemon Champion. Let’s not forget the intense rivalry between you and your friends to have the best collection of Pokemon.
The first Mario game to land on the Game Boy was just as brilliant as the console version and was the first example of a a proper console game going handheld. You could even dabble in Mario’s brief time as a pilot and submarine commander.
The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening
The fourth Zelda game and the first for handheld, Link’s Awakeningwas labelled by some reviewers as “the best Game Boy game ever,” when it came out in 1993. For the time, it had an epic story that “fit in the palm of your hand”.
Kirby has always been one of the underappreciated Nintendo characters. Whenever you played the pink fluff ball you would smile and be charmed.
While it’s an exteremly short game, it was the first time we saw Kirby, and without it we wouldn’t have the little guy to eat others in Super Smash Brothers.
