YOU will no longer need a Foxtel set top box to access Foxtel.

The subscription television company announced that starting from June, people can subscribe to Foxtel Play to access TV shows and films on their tablets, TVs, phones and game consoles.

Starting from $25 a month users will be able access shows and movies via the Foxtel Go app with no lock in contract.

This is a long awaited move targeting people who don’t want to, can't afford or are unable to install a full Foxtel installation in their homes.

Foxtel has yet to announce the channels that will be available via Foxtel Play but sources close to the matter say that users will be able to subscribe by genre, (i.e sports, movies, lifestyle etc).

The move to gadget based entertainment consumption comes just weeks after it was reported that Nielsen would be changing the way it records TV ratings to include shows that are consumed on computers, tablets, mobile phones and games consoles, reflecting changes in how people consume their entertainment.

However a spokesperson for Foxtel says the launch of Foxtel Play has nothing to do with Nielsen's decision.

"It's got nothing to with that," the spokesperson said. "It's about us being innovative, allowing users to sample our service in different ways."
