Australia could soon join the Google Chromecast TV streaming club
AUSTRALIANS may finally get their hands on Google’s new, cheap and tiny tool to stream video online.
GOOGLE executives have given the strongest indication yet that the company’s tiny and cheap media streaming device may be headed Down Under.
Speaking at the SXSW conference in Austin, Sundar Pichai, Google’s Senior Vice President of Android, Chrome and Google Apps, stated that the company planned to bring the tiny HDMI-connected streaming device to “many more countries” within a couple of weeks.
Previous rumours suggested that Google might bring the Chromecast to Australia in collaboration with Telstra and this may be part of that strategy.
Mr Pichai did not elaborate further on which countries would be getting the Chromecast device.
To date, the $39 Chromecast has only been available in the US market. Those keen to use its streaming abilities, which initially covered YouTube, Google Play Movies, Netflix and “Chromecasting” — sending video from a Chrome browser tab to your television — had to use US shipping agents to use the devices in Australia.
Mr Pichai also used the speech to announce that Google would shortly be releasing a software development kit for developers to create applications for wearable devices such as smartwatches.
