Samsung Galaxy Buds+ undercut AirPods Pro but don’t have noise cancellation
Apple’s AirPods dominate the true wireless earbud market, but its latest competitor has left out a crucial feature it needs to defeat them.
Samsung has unveiled the latest edition of its wireless earphones in a bid to take on Apple’s AirPods.
The South Korean tech titan showed off the Samsung Galaxy Buds+ at a launch event in San Francisco alongside its latest smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S20.
They’ll hit Australian stores soon priced at $299, but you can also get a pair free if you pre-order one of the new phones at select retailers.
That puts them priced between Apple’s popular AirPods ($249) and the much better AirPods Pro ($399), but Samsung doesn’t have the active noise cancellation you get on the more expensive Apple buds that makes them worth the extra cost.
The buds follow up on last year’s impressive Samsung Galaxy Buds.

Like their predecessors, they’re Bluetooth earbuds that allow you to listen to and control your music without the need for dangling wires.
Apparently they sound a lot better thanks to speakers that are 40 per cent bigger than the last ones.
Samsung said the extra speaker makes your music sound “crystal clear”.
“Buds+ sound so good, the music will flow through you,” Samsung said.
“You’ll want to get up and dance.”
The Buds+ feature wireless charging and reverse wireless charging, meaning you can use your phone to juice them up if they’re running out of battery (provided it is also reverse wireless charging compatible).
Samsung promises an hour of battery life after charging your Buds+ for just three minutes via USB-C.
They work for 11 hours after a full charge, while a protective charging case provides a further 11 hours, for a total of 22.
An app for the Buds+ recently appeared on the Apple App Store as a preview.
Samsung noted that its app “will allow iOS users to enjoy an optimised sound experience, on the go.”
The Buds+ will work with any Apple mobile from the iPhone 7 onward, and will come with a host of settings to help you customise your listening, according to the app’s description.
Also at today’s event, Samsung showed off the Galaxy S20, its latest smartphone.
The mobile boasts a top-of-the-range triple camera system capable of up to 100x digital zoom, letting you take close-up shots of distant objects.
Samsung said its new phone – also out next month – had a “smaller bezel than ever before”.
The S20 comes in three versions: The entry level S20 (6.2-inch), bulkier S20+ (6.7-inch) and enormous S20 Ultra (6.9-inch).
