Twitch looking for the best all-round gamer in the world in the Prime Gaming Ultimate Showdown

Gamers from around the world are invited to try to quality for the ultimate test of their skills and raise money for charity.

The 15 Best PC Games of All Time

Twitch and Amazon are hosting a new pseudo-game show on the streaming platform, with live events on three continents ahead of a grand final at TwitchCon in San Diego. Prime Gaming’s Ultimate Showdown is a multi-game competition that will test skills in “first-person and team-based shooters, MMOs, asymmetric survivals, and MOBA games.”

Any and everyone is welcome to compete in the qualifiers which are taking place in Seattle, Amsterdam, Germany, and Japan. Five winners from each will go on to the finals at TwitchCon in October. The first qualifier is the Seattle one, on June 25, while the others are at TwitchCon EU in July, Gamescom in August, and Tokyo Game Show in September.

Naturally, everything will be streamed online via Twitch’s PrimeGaming channel with various big Twitch names taking part, though exactly who is yet to be announced. The official blog post also mentions giveaways you can get involved in for various peripherals and clothing.

More information is promised in the coming weeks, including details of the charities that will be supported by the events – while the winners will be making big money for themselves, they’ll also each be raising awareness for a charity.

This is not the first competition of its time, hearkening back to the WCG Ultimate Gamer days of the late ‘00s. That show was long before the advent of Twitch and while it helped to launch a few careers, didn’t prove especially popular. With the skill and time it takes to specialise in a single game, competing across several is a challenge.

Amazon taking the different tack of using members of the public rather than famous esports players is likely to be received, and go, much better.
