Spider-Man 2 release date potentially leaked

The long-awaited follow up to Insomniac’s Spider-Man game may have had its release date leaked on the website of one of its writers

The next Spider-Man game from Sony subsidiary Insomniac Games has so far only had a vague “2023” release window, but a slip up from one of the game’s writers may have narrowed down that window quite a bit.

As reported by TheGamer, Insomniac writer Jamie Mayer listed on her website that she was writing for two upcoming games, the first being Spider-Man 2, and the second being the previously announced Wolverine game. She went into a little too much detail, however, giving a release window for Spider-Man 2 that has not been publicly stated by Sony.

Her website read “Currently on the writing team for the upcoming Spider-Man 2 (release fall 2023) and Wolverwine games (release TBD) for Insomniac Games/Sony Interactive”. The line has since been removed from the site.

If this slip of the tongue is accurate, then the game should be released in the US’s Autumn season, which in 2023 runs from September 23 to December 20. This lines up with previous releases, as the first Spider-Man game released in September 2018, and its spin-off Spider-Man: Miles Morales released in November 2020.

Insomniac’s Spider-Man games have been released to critical and commercial success, with critics calling the game one of the greatest superhero games ever made. By May 2022, the first game had sold over 33 million units across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC, making it one of the best-selling games of all time.

Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine aren’t the only Marvel games in development. Electronic Arts recently announced it would develop three new Marvel games, starting with an Iron Man game from Montreal-based developer EA Motive. The other two games have not yet been announced, but one is rumoured to be an open-world Black Panther game.

Not to be outdone, DC games are also in development, including a Suicide Squad game developed by Batman Arkham developer Rocksteady. A new trailer for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League debuted at The Game Awards, but the trailer held a bittersweet tribute, revealing that Batman would be voiced by the late Kevin Conroy, who passed away last month.
