Sony ‘considering’ Gran Turismo on PC

The PlayStation-exclusive Gran Turismo series might not be exclusive for long, according to a surprising interview with its creator

The currently PlayStation-exclusive Gran Turismo series might be headed to PC for the first time, according to series creator Kazunori Yamauchi.

In an interview with GTPlanet during the Gran Turismo World Finals in Monaco, Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi said that he thinks that the series could make its way to PC. However, there are a few caveats, according to Yamauchi, as he and the development team at Polyphony Digital want it to be the best it can possibly be.

“Gran Turismo is a very finely tuned title,” Yamauchi said, “There are not many platforms which could run the game in 4K/60p natively, so one way we make that possible is to narrow down the platform. It’s not a very easy subject, but of course, we are looking into it and considering it”.

Yamauchi is referring to the PlayStation 5 version of Gran Turismo 7 there, which has the game running at a full 4K resolution at 60fps on Sony’s flagship console. However, as noted by GTPlanet, the game already runs at a lower resolution on the PS4 and PS4 Pro, both of which offer reduced resolution, texture quality, and trackside detail.

Despite the noncommittal answer from Yamauchi, a PC version of Gran Turismo 7 doesn’t feel too far-fetched. Sony has been bringing a number of its PlayStation-exclusive titles to PC in recent years, with titles like God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Uncharted 4, and Horizon: Zero Dawn already available on Windows PCs.

That said, the Gran Turismo series has remained exclusive to PlayStation consoles since its inception. The first game in the series debuted on the original PlayStation back in 1997, and since then every PlayStation console and handheld except the Vita saw a Gran Turismo release.

The Gran Turismo series has long offered players a serious racing simulation, allowing players to finetune their vehicles and race on a number of real-world tracks from around the world. Given EA has cancelled the Project CARS series, all of which had launched on PC and were similarly serious racing sims, now might be a good time for Sony to move into the space.

EA has also had to apologise over a series of “rude” tweets in relation to another one of its racing games, Need for Speed Unbound. The game’s official Twitter account lashed out at fans who were upset with the game’s three-day Early Access policy, calling one fan a “milkshake brain” and encouraging the player to “cry about it”. The offending tweets have since been deleted, and EA apologised, saying it got “a bit caught up in the hype”.
