Silent Hill returns with new movie and games

Silent Hill: Transmission announced a slew of new games and a brand new movie for the series.

Last night Konami aired its first-ever Silent Hill: Transmission, a premiere show along the lines of a Nintendo Direct, and with it showed off a new movie and two new games and a mysterious “interactive live event.”

Silent Hill is a beloved horror game franchise that has, unfortunately, seen better days. The first four games, Silent Hill 1 through 4, are often cited when people discuss the greatest horror games of all time. To give you a sense of time, Silent Hill 4 was made for the PlayStation 2 and released in 2004. Subsequent games in the series, however, left fans disappointed, with its most recent game, Downpour, releasing in 2012 to an average critic score.

Since then, no Silent Hill project has been released —a “playable teaser,” called P.T. was released and revealed to be the prequel to a new game called Silent Hills, but Konami cancelled the project and, controversially, removed P.T. from the PlayStation Store.

The Transmission broadcast first showcased a Silent Hill 2 remake, developed by Bloober Team, who developed Layers of Fear and The Medium. The trailer showed iconic scenes from the game, remade for modern consoles. Following that, we also got a first look at Silent Hill: Townfall — though no gameplay or story elements were revealed about the game.

The movie was featured next, named Return to Silent Hill, and is being directed by the same director as the first Silent Hill movie. The new movie will centre around Silent Hill 2’s story, with storyboards directly showing James Sutherland, the main character, searching for his wife, Mary.

Finally, two additional projects were shown off — the first being Silent Hill: Ascension, which is a “live event” for the franchise where “decisions you make mean life or death” and “there is no reset button.” The final project shown off was Silent Hill: f, and while no gameplay was shown, this game does have a new locale. Most Silent Hill games take place in some version of America, but this one features a countryside Japanese environment.
