Rumours fly over hidden Call of Duty nuke

Call of Duty Warzone 2.0 might have a hidden nuke, but players don’t know how to find it and the game’s developers are staying quiet

Call of Duty Warzone 2.0, the free-to-play Call of Duty battle royale game that released just this week, has rumours swirling about a hidden nuclear bomb item, but nobody can seem to find it.

Twitch streamer TimTheTatman had a cheeky clip of his posted to Twitter yesterday, showing another player jumping from a bridge into the water below. Just as the player hits the water, the video cuts away to show a stock footage clip of an underwater explosion.

The clip, which has been viewed 1.4 million times, is fairly innocuous as it is, but there might be a little more to it. It was titled “first nuke in Warzone 2.0”, and was curiously quote-tweeted by Warzone 2.0 developer Raven Software, who added to the mystery by saying “So the rumours are true…?” followed by a suspicious thinking emoji.

Naturally, this set the game’s players into motion, desperately searching for a way to unlock the weapon, spurred on by seeming confirmation from the game’s developer. The Call of Duty subreddit has been theorising possible ways to unlock the nuke, but hasn’t had much luck.

A prevalent Call of Duty insider, known as ModernWarzone on Twitter, suggested that players will need to win five matches in a row before the weapon materialises. Unfortunately, players who’ve managed to do exactly that – an impressive feat in this early stage of the game – came up empty, and no nuclear weapons of any game have been found yet.

Raven Software has so far opted not to elaborate on the topic further, leaving just the one tweet referencing the rumours and ignoring comments asking for help. It could very well be that there is no nuke in the game at all, or at least right now, but with so many players amped up by the search for the hidden nuke, it would probably be a good idea for Raven Software to follow through and give the people what they want.

The Call of Duty franchise is at the heart of an ongoing investigation by anti-competition regulators worldwide due to a $100b deal that would see Microsoft acquire series developer Activision Blizzard. Microsoft says the deal is not “all about Call of Duty”, saying that Candy Crush developer King, also included in the deal, is much more important as the company looks to expand its mobile offerings.

Microsoft also recently announced that it had banned 7 million Xbox accounts in 2022, in a transparency report released this week. More than half of those accounts banned were suspended before their activities affected other players, in an automated process that Microsoft calls “proactive enforcement”.
