DRX beats EDG in LOL Worlds: Kim "Deft" Hyuk-kyu breaks down in tears
DRX has pulled off an incredible win over their Chinese rival EDG — and one of the stars of the show burst into tears.
Korean League of Legends pro team DRX has knocked out the 2021 World Champions, Edward Gaming or EDG, in a reverse sweep.
They came back from a 2-0 deficit to win three straight games in a row, knocking EDG out of the world tournament.
EDG, a Chinese professional team, won in 2021 against a slew of tough opponents, and looked this year to clear out the Quarterfinals with a 2-0 lead against opposing team DRX. However, a rash of extremely unfortunate decisions and teamfights gave DRX a three-win streak, knocking EDG out of the tournament.
The star of the show was Kim “Zeka” Geon-woo, who dominated the game with extremely fantastic plays, including four solo kills, with many against EDG’s Lee “Scout” Ye-chan.
The two have some history, as in previous splits, Scout dominated against Zeka, so the reversal was exciting to see.
Game 5, the final game of the series, was a nailbiter, as EDG had a deficit of over 5,000 gold or more for the majority of the match, but was still able to teamfight effectively and snipe off kills, including a teamfight at Baron that granted DRX the buff, but managing to lose one member, DRX Deft. The next Baron, EDG was able to push away DRX and even force down one of their members before Dragon spawned.

However, an extremely clutch Smite steal from DRX — while down a man in a 5v4 situation — demoralised EDG, and the resulting team fight ended with DRX Zeka getting a Quadra Kill, against the reigning world champs, in his first-ever LoL Worlds appearance.
EDG could not recover, and DRX marched on the Nexus, securing their third straight win of the series and advancing to the semi-finals in the tournament, where they will face Gen G in a best of five. Gen G knocked out last years runners-up, DWG, yesterday in a 3-2 victory. Next Sunday, the semi-finals of Worlds starts up, with JD Gaming taking on the infamous T1 Gaming, the first LCK, or League of Legends Champions Korea, team to ever achieve a perfect regular season.
Following the match there was an extremely touching interview.
Belgian esports presenter Eefje 'sjokz' Depoortere asked Deft what it “means to be back” and the young player burst into tears, overcome by the emotion of the moment.
His fellow player Pyosik put a hand on his back but also appeared to be choking back tears.
