A financial report released by Sony revealed that by the first quarter of this fiscal year ending June 31, the company shipped over 21.7 million units worldwide.

If you still don’t have a PlayStation 5, don’t feel bad — shipping is about the same as it has been for the past year. In its financial report for the first quarter of the 2022 fiscal year, Sony revealed that the final three months leading up to the end of the fiscal year saw 2.4 million PS5s shipped – 100,000 more than the same period from the previous fiscal year.

The financial report also revealed some interesting statistics:

• Combined sales of the PS5 and PS4 totalled over 47 million units in the first quarter, down nearly 16.5 million from the previous fiscal year. This is likely due to the computer chip storage that has been plaguing the tech industry recently.

• Despite selling fewer units overall, sales figures are up by nearly 55 bln yen. Sony attributes this to “significant increases in Pictures and Music segments sales.”

• The company’s Pictures department saw an increase of 135 over Q1 FY 21.

• Sony expects to see a continued downward trend in its Game and Network Services (G&NS) segment throughout the rest of July.

While the PlayStation is still holding somewhat strong, it falls behind the Nintendo Switch in terms of units sold — the Switch sold 4.11 million for Nintendo’s Q1 in 2022. Xbox led the way in terms of consumer spending, but overall had less units sold than the Switch.

This follows a downward trend for spending on gaming hardware — in the US, spending on video games, in general, fell nearly 8% year-over-year, to a new total of just under $14 billion USD.

That’s not the only PlayStation news to come out recently — a judge rejected a PlayStation antitrust lawsuit recently, claiming that the plaintiffs failed to prove that PlayStation was attempting to form a monopoly with their PlayStation Online Store. PlayStation also unveiled new details about its upcoming VR headset, including a new feature that helps prevent breaking your valuables.
