New PlayStation VR headset costs more than PS5

Fans are reeling after the PSVR2 price was announced — it’s more expensive than the base console required to use it.

Sony announced the PSVR2 price and release date, and fans are not happy in the slightest — the PSVR2 will run you more than a PlayStation 5 console.

PlayStation 5 consoles are becoming easier to find out in the wild — with shipping and stock concerns slowly being alleviated, it’s never been easier to find a PS5 in stock at your retailer of choice. If you were banking on finally getting one to prepare for the new PlayStation VR headset, you’re going to have to shell out quite a bit of cash., as the PSVR2 is going to run you approximately $550 USD (approximately $865 AUD.)

For comparison, the PlayStation 5 console itself retails at $800 AUD, while the cheaper digital-only version goes for $650 AUD. Immediately, people on social media were incensed at the high price point: “Gaming is already expensive, but this is built for an entirely [different] social class above me,” wrote one user on a Reddit discussion thread.

Others pointed out that despite the high price tag, the PSVR2 is still competitive against other VR tech: “For comparison the Valve Index for $1000 [USD] has a higher FOV but lower resolution display,” wrote another user. “Quest Pro is $1500 [USD] for slightly improved specs to the Quest 2 but with pass through and eye / face tracking and better controllers (available separately for $300 [USD]), but still worse specs than this since its also stand-alone/wireless.”

For many, the decision will come down to whether the games are worth it or not — and thankfully, Sony has provided a list of launch titles for you to choose from. These include a VR Dark Pictures game, Crossfire: Sierra Squad, The Light Brigade, Hello Neighbor: Search and Rescue, Cites: VR, Jurassic World Aftermath Collection, Cosmonious High, Zenith: The Last Ciy, Pistol Whip VR, Tentacular, and After the Fall.

The PSVR2 will not be backwards compatible, and will not be able to be used on your PC or any other platform. PlayStation VR2 launches February 22, but pre-orders start November 15.
