New Far Cry 6 expansion gets weird

Ubisoft has announced a new expansion for Far Cry 6, and it’s probably not what you’re expecting if you played the original game

Rumours fly over hidden Call of Duty nuke

A new expansion for Far Cry 6 has been announced by the game’s developer Ubisoft, but it’s a lot weirder than some were expecting.

For those who haven’t played it, Far Cry 6 is a moderately realistic first person shooter that has players taking down the fascist president and his regime in a Caribbean island called Yara that’s largely inspired by Cuba. This new expansion is definitely not that.

Instead, the new expansion, subtitled Lost Between Worlds, has the player thrust into a fractured, crystalline version of the game world, complete with fantasy monsters called Shardfaces and a ghostly guide called Fai (thanks, Press Start).

Ubisoft says that players will make their way through a gauntlet of fractured rifts to collect five shards needed to repair the vessel that will take them home. Players will reportedly be able to choose their paths through the expansion’s fifteen rifts, with some being filled with puzzles and traps, and others being more combat- or stealth-oriented.

This isn’t the first time that Far Cry has gotten a little bit weird with its expansions and spin-offs, in fact it’s somewhat of a tradition at this point. Far Cry 3 had the excellent Blood Dragon expansion, which put players in a high-adrenaline 80s action sci-fi movie-inspired romp where they gunned down laser-equipped dinosaurs to an energetic 80s-style soundtrack.

Far Cry 4 subsequently had players going up against giant yetis in its expansion, while Far Cry 5 had two completely out-there expansion packs. The first had players trying to survive against waves of zombies, while the second sent players to Mars, where they had to take down giant alien spiders.

Ubisoft says that players can access Far Cry 6: Lost Between Worlds in a number of different ways when it releases next week on December 6th. They can pick it up for $29.95 by itself, access it through the game’s Game of the Year Upgrade Pass, which includes the expansion and the previous season pass, or through subscribing to Ubisoft+, the company’s paid subscription service.

Ubisoft revealed recently that its games were headed back to Steam, after a three-year absence from new releases on the platform. To start with only three titles, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Anno 1800, and Roller Champions will be headed to Valve’s gaming storefront, but it’s expected that more titles, like Far Cry 6, will become available eventually too.

The company also recently revealed that its new Just Dance game is the most accessible yet. Just Dance 2023 Edition features a host of new accessibility options, including seated dances, improvements to its HUD, and colourblind accessibility options.
