Move over energy drinks — milk sponsors Twitch Con

Twitch-Con San Diego announced its list of sponsors, and there are more than a few eyebrow-raising choices.

Twitch has officially released its sponsors for Twitch Con San Diego, and while there are the usual suspects that you’d expect at a gaming convention, there are also some eye-opening choices, such as milk — as in, the dairy product.

Gonna Need Milk is sponsoring the “How Fast Are You?” booth that promises to “test your physical and mental performance with an epic head-to-head gaming competition.” While further details are sparse, it promises to refuel everyone with “chocolate milk and limited edition swag.”

There are other sponsors as well — Capital One, a credit card business, is sponsoring food and drinks and offering discounts to Capital One customers, while Wendy’s, a fast-food chain, is offering access to the “Wendyverse”, which appears to be another corporate attempt to claim entry into the Metaverse, only in VR. At least this version of it isn’t expressly targeting kids.

Other sponsors include Butterfinger, a candy bar, and Chevron, the oil giant, which is sponsoring charging stations — supposedly in-between harassing environmental lawyers that take it to task over land contamination in the Amazon. To cap it all off, Twitch Con is also sponsored by Velveeta — you know, the cheese product — and Prada Fragrance. So you can snack on cheesy hors d’oeuvres while surrounded by clouds of mall perfume.

Twitch Con isn’t exactly picky about who gets to sponsor it and have a booth — previous Twitch Cons had a United States Army sponsorship tethered to it.

Twitch Con, and other conventions as well, can be fun ways to spend time with friends and meet huge content creators, but as with any mega corporate-sponsored event, it should also be approached warily. What are the sponsors trying to sell? Who are they trying to convince to buy their product? These are questions attendees should be asking while enjoying the food and fun — and while it can extend up to oil companies, it can also extend down to a company simply selling choccy milk, no matter how epic you are.

Twitch has had a tumultuous month, to say the least. Although the streaming giant finally banned gambling, causing cheers of ‘we did it’ from its platform stars, Twitch shortly thereafter announced it would be removing the 70/30 revenue split from all content creators, enraging streamers.
