Marvel directors Anthony and Joe Russo praise The Last of Us Part 2 as ‘one of the greatest games ever made’

Movie directors Anthony and Joseph Russo watched popular games’ cinematic scenes in an interview for IGN.

Avengers Directors Compare Action From Movies and Games

Famous movie directors Anthony and Joseph Russo, collectively known as the ‘Russo brothers’, recently sat down with IGN to watch clips from popular video games. Their favourite clip, by far, was a scene from The Last of Us Part 2, earning a 9/10.

You probably have heard of the Russo brothers if you’ve seen a Marvel film recently — everything from Avengers: Endgame to Captain America: Civil War. While their expertise lies in film, they definitely have an appreciation for other art mediums, including video games.

Sitting down with IGN, a gaming publication, to promote their new movie The Gray Man, the Russo brothers watched footage from several video games, such as Uncharted 4, Resident Evil 8, Heavy Rain, Crash Bandicoot 4, It Takes Two, and of course, The Last of Us Part 2.

In particular, they appeared to enjoy The Last of Us Part 2 the most — a game well known for its cinematic sequences. Recognising the game immediately, Joe claimed that “This is one of the greatest games ever made.”

The sequence they were shown was the “hospital” scene, where Abby has to outrun and eventually confront the giant abomination chasing her. Calling it “Spielberg-ian” and praising how little they showed the monster while retaining a lot of tension through smart camera work. “It’s the best of the bunch so far,” Joe says.

While reviewing the other games, they had solid praise for the first-person work in Resident Evil 8 and the top-down angle for It Takes Two’s chase sequences (stating that it reminded them of Peter Jackson’s camerawork,) but felt that Crash Bandicoot’s camera angle was a little rough. The Uncharted 4 chase scene where Drake is on a motorcycle being pursued reminded them of the Casino Royale introduction sequence.

They also said that Heavy Rain’s sequence (where the detective is chasing a suspect through a supermarket and failing all of the prompts) was “absurd.” They still seemed to enjoy it, however, stating that “We also like to dabble in the absurd.”
