Mario movie poster shows off Mushroom Kingdom

Nintendo has released its first look at the upcoming Mario movie, set to release next year, and fans were quick to jump on plot theories.

Nintendo shared the first glimpse of the new Mario movie with a poster and a Nintendo Direct planned for October 7.

Nintendo Directs are mini-presentations from Nintendo, usually to showcase upcoming games for the Nintendo Switch.

This Nintendo Direct, however, will feature no game information at all, and instead be focused squarely on the Super Mario Bros. movie.

Nintendo tweeted a teaser image for the movie, showing Mario being led around by Toad in the Mushroom Kingdom. Immediately, people took to Twitter to post their theories on what the movie could entail.

Some believe that this could be a Mario origin story, as two of the Toads appear to be staring at Mario with confusion, while others were keener to zero in on Mario’s ... er ... lack of a rear. The environments in the background show off familiar sights to Mario game veterans, with floating platforms and mushrooms aplenty.

The official description for the movie states that it follows Mario as he “travels through an underground labyrinth with his brother, Luigi, trying to save a captured princess”.

Chris Pratt will be voicing Mario, while Charlie Day of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fame will play Luigi. Anna Taylor-Joy will voice Peach and Jack Black will voice Bowser.

The Direct airs on October 7 at 7am ACT, and the Mario movie will premiere in theatres worldwide on April 7, 2023.

Nintendo news is aplenty besides the movie, of course. Nintendo also hosted a recent games-focused Nintendo Direct, featuring a number of new titles coming to the Nintendo Switch later this year, such as Harvestella and the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild — Tears of the Kingdom.
