‘I feel a little weird about it’ - Dead Space’s Glen Schofield opens up on the remake

We had a chat with Glen Schofield, one of the key figures behind Dead Space, and asked him how he feels about the remake.

The Best Survival Horror Games

Dead Space launched back in 2008, and 14 years later it’s considered a classic. For publisher EA, it did well enough to warrant two sequels, but every new iteration in the series pushed the action forward and scaled the horror elements back, even going so far as to make Dead Space 3 playable entirely in co-op.

Recently EA announced a full remake of the first Dead Space. We got the chance to chat with Glen Schofield, one of the key figures behind Dead Space, and asked him how he feels about the remake.

“I wish them luck, I really do,” he said. “But I feel a little weird about it. They’re devs, I want them to do well. I’m just in this weird space about it. I feel weird that they’re remaking one of my games. I guess it’s a compliment, and I appreciate it from that perspective.”

Considering the direction the series went in, it’s ironic that the original game is the one getting the remake treatment.

“I worked on Dead Space 2 for about 10 months before I started at Sledgehammer and I knew that that’s where they wanted to go,” Schofield said when asked about the change in tone between games.

“I wasn’t happy with that direction, to be honest with you. But I do understand. They thought more action would possibly sell more. Dead Space 2 was a really great game. They made a 90-rated game, but if you’re gonna make a sci-fi survival horror game, you’ve got to stick with what makes it that.”

Schofield and his new team at Striking Distance are currently working on The Callisto Protocol, a new survival horror game set in a prison on one of Jupiter’s moons. It looks stunning and scary in the most recent trailer, and you’ll be able to play it on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC in December.
