Hit indie game Hades getting sequel

Supergiant Games has announced a follow-up to its highly acclaimed roguelike game Hades, set to release sometime next year

Monster Hunter Rise is coming to Xbox Game Pass

Supergiant Games has announced a follow-up sequel to the highly-acclaimed indie roguelike game Hades, which won multiple awards when it was released in 2020.

The announcement was made at the 2022 Game Awards, which took place earlier today, alongside dozens of other new game announcements. Unlike the first Hades game, which focused on the prince of the underworld Zagreus, Hades II will have the player taking control of the princess of the underworld, who so far is unnamed.

The game’s Steam description gives a little bit more information, but it seems like Supergiant is keeping its cards close to its chest.

“The first-ever sequel from Supergiant Games builds on the best aspects of the original god-like rogue-like dungeon crawler in an all-new, action-packed, endlessly replayable experience rooted in the Underworld of Greek myth and its deep connections to the dawn of witchcraft.”

“As the immortal Princess of the Underworld, you’ll explore a bigger, deeper mythic world, vanquishing the forces of the Titan of Time with the full might of Olympus behind you, in a sweeping story that continually unfolds through your every setback and accomplishment.”

Like the first game, Hades II will feature handpainted environments, dozens of voiced characters, and fast-paced, snappy combat. It will also be a roguelike game, which is a genre of game that has players replaying sections upon death while keeping some small upgrades upon each death.

The first Hades game released to near-universal acclaim from critics and fans alike, with many praising the graphics, storytelling, and combat. It won game of the year awards from multiple media outlets and went on to sell over a million copies across Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms.

Hades II will be available in early access on PC in 2023, but other platforms have not yet been announced.

It’s not the only indie hit announced at The Game Awards, however. The massively popular Dead Cells was announced to be getting Castlevania-themed DLC, complete with characters and environments from the Konami series.

Celeste developer Extremely OK Games also showed off a brand new game called Earthblade. While the new game won’t be available until 2024 at the earliest, it looks to be capturing the same magic that Celeste did, just with a much more spooky fantasy vibe to it.
