Fan-favourite horror game lands movie adaptation

Bioshock is getting a movie adaptation, and has secured a director and writer.

Tomb Raider Leaked Script Appears to Be Genuine

BioShock, a horror-action game that has players fight their way through an underwater city full of mutated people, is receiving a film adaptation. A writer and director have been announced via official channels.

The official Netflix account recently tweeted that the director will be Francis Lawrence, who directed I Am Legend and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and the script for the movie was written by Michael Green, whose works include Blade Runner 2049 and American Gods.

For those unaware, BioShock centres around a protagonist named Jack, who survives a plane crash in the middle of the ocean. Near the crash site, he discovers a lone lighthouse, and inside, a way down into the submerged city of Rapture.

Rapture was a wholly independent city born out of libertarian values, and as a result of those values, the city fell into disarray and chaos. The unethical creation and use of experimental chemicals, known as Plasmids, allowed the inhabitants of Rapture to modify their DNA and use a wide variety of powers, such as the ability to conjure up fireballs, ice shards, and killer wasps — all of which Jack has to use to escape the decaying city.

Bioshock won critical acclaim for its story and atmosphere, as the entire game takes place around the 1960s. Throughout the game, you’ll find old-timey music, clothes, shows, and more in various states of decay and disarray. How well it will translate to the silver screen, however, is unknown.

Video games, if they’re popular enough, tend to get made into movies (with varying degrees of success.) Tomb Raider, a game that follows the adventures of archaeologist Lara Croft, has a movie that is in limbo as the original studio lost the rights to the film. And don’t get mistaken — games are made from movies just as much as movies are made from games. We’ve got a list of the ten worst movie tie-in games in existence right here.
