Capcom reinstate version of Resident Evil 2, 3, and 7 with less features after fan complaints

Capcom release rollback version of game to allow for mod usage, and let it run on older PCs.

It’s somewhat rare that a community complains about getting more stuff and options in their games, but today not only did they, they were right, and the developer acquiesced.

Resident Evil 7, as well as the remakes of 2 and 3 on Steam were patched to include Ray Tracing and enhanced 3D audio. This made the games no longer operational on certain low-end hardware, but it also broke every mod that had been made for either game.

Resident Evil 2 Remake’s modding scene is fairly extensive, ranging from model and costume swaps for its various heroes and villains to first-person mods and gameplay tweaks. Dressing up either protagonist Claire or constant chaser Mr. X in a variety of swimwear is, predictably, pretty popular. Perhaps most terrifyingly of all, you can be pursued by Thomas the Tank Engine over Mr. X.

Capcom’s fix uses the branch system on Steam to allow for a rollback to the previous version. It’s been well-received by the community.

The same is true of Resident Evil 3 Remake, which has a host of its own graphical swap mods and camera fixes, and Resident Evil 7, which has less, ahem, charged, mods and more technical ones to improve playability. There’s also one that replaces the infamous Baker family of antagonists with The Simpsons because that’s scarier, somehow. All these should now work again.

The default version for the three games is still the ray tracing enabled version, and it does look noticeably better in most circumstances.

In related news, Resident Evil 8 will be receiving a pseudo-sequel DLC titled Shadow of Rose later this year, as announced during Summer Game Fest as part of the Capcom Showcase. That’s coming October 28, alongside a number of other upgrades in what they’re calling an expansion DLC.
