Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II releases October 28
A new engine, a new Warzone, new AI, same old Call of Duty for Modern Warfare II.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, not to be confused with all the other times it’s been called that, is this year’s Call of Duty game.
Infinity Ward are delivering a follow-up to their 2019 reboot of the series with all the usual bombast. It will come alongside a new version of the battle royale Warzone, as well as various engine upgrades, AI improvements, and much more.
The game will release on October 28 for current and last-gen consoles, as well as PC. The series is also coming back to Steam, having abandoned Valve’s digital distribution platform in favour of the Activision-Blizzard owned Battle.net for Black Ops 4 in 2018. No explanation is forthcoming about why they’ve changed course, though the game will be available on both platforms.
In addition to the above trailer and Warzone 2.0, Infinity Ward and Activision announced a new Warzone mobile game was in development, and that they are unifying the series to a new engine, yet to be announced. This means that future games, Modern Warfare II, and Warzone 2.0 will all be running on the same thing. This should help with asset sharing as well as general development practices.
On the new engine, Infinity Ward says that the game will be the most realistic and stunning-looking ever, a yearly proclamation, and also makes big claims about the AI. This is particularly relevant for the Special Ops co-op mode.
Pre-ordering on any platform gets you access to an upcoming open-beta for the multiplayer portion, which looks as crazed as ever. Doing so on PlayStation will have earlier access than other platforms. There will also be more footage at the Summer Game Fest event tonight.
Another, longer trailer also made its debut at Summer Game Fest, titled Dark Water:
Yup, that’s Call of Duty.
