Aussie game wins coveted Golden Joystick award

Award-winning indie game Cult of the Lamb is set to get a huge update at some point this year, according to Melbourne-based developer Massive Monster.

The update was detailed in a New Year message shared on the game’s Steam page, which also thanked players for their dedication to the game and for their support.

The new update, tentatively titled Major Content Update, will come with a host of fixes and improvements, as well as what Massive Monster is calling “more depth”. It’s said to focus on combat and dungeon gameplay, and apparently will be taking player feedback into account.

The biggest part of the upcoming update is heavy attacks, where players can now hold the attack button to charge up an attack, before unleashing it on a wide range of enemies. Massive Monster says each different weapon type has its own kind of heavy attack, each varying wildly from each other and existing attacks in the game.

For example, axe-type weapons will be able to be thrown using the heavy attack, before boomeranging back to the player. Daggers, on the other hand, will rain projectiles from the sky when charged up and released.

Massive Monster says that the major content update will be free for all players across all platforms, and will add more than just combat options. It says that the update will also add “depth, difficulty, accessibility, and quality of life” improvements, as well as some features and additions most requested by fans.

It’s still a little way away, however — Massive Monster says that there’s some minor bug fixes coming early in the year, but the major content update still needs a little bit of time. It doesn’t say when, exactly, that update is likely to hit, but it should arrive sometime in 2023.

Cult of the Lamb has seen massive success since its release in June 2022, with the Aussie game winning a coveted Golden Joystick award in November. It received the Golden Joystick award for Best Indie Game, often regarded as one of the most prestigious awards an indie game can receive.

Cult of the Lamb also exceeded sales expectations, with developer Julian Wilton saying that he “wouldn’t be surprised if [the game] hit a million units” in its first month on sale. The game topped the sales charts on the Nintendo Switch eShop for weeks following its release, and saw hundreds of thousands of sales on PC via Steam.
