Assassin’s Creed Rift will apparently be set in Baghdad and is coming in the next 12 months

Next two Assassin’s Creeds – Rift and Infinity – are on the horizon, with the former set in Baghdad.

The rumour mill continues to turn, and this time it’s spitting out Assassin’s Creed news. According to various sources, two games are in development in the long-running action-adventure series from Ubisoft. Assassin’s Creed: Infinity, an officially acknowledged but otherwise unannounced project, is coming next year as a very large, multiplayer enabled experience.

However, in the near future there are plans for another, smaller game currently codenamed Assassin’s Creed: Rift. That game, according to both Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier and Eurogamer, centres on AC: Valhalla’s Basim and is set in Baghdad. A time period was not given, though the character was alive in the late 9th century in the previous game.

These revelations have come about as counter to other rumours that the next Assassin’s Creed would be set in the Aztec nations of Central America. This, according to Schreier, is not on the cards – at least for those next two games.

As mentioned by Eurogamer, Rift is smaller scale and focused on stealth, rather than the more open third-person combat that has become the series mainstay in recent years.

All this is rumours – Ubisoft has said it will “unveil the future of Assassin’s Creed” in September. That’s likely at the announced Ubisoft Forward event, the publisher’s online announcement showcase that usually takes place around E3 time. This year’s edition is after Gamescom and is oddly placed in general – which would suggest the company has some big things to announce.

In related news, it turned out that, despite information to the contrary on store pages, Ubisoft won’t be removing the ability to play Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD. They are still shutting down the online and DLC components of a large number of games, however.
