8 best PS1 games of all time

The PS1 was a landmark console that defined every generation up until now. It’s games will live forever in the nostalgic memories of everyone.

The Best PS1 Games

It’s easy to forget in the modern-day just how many amazing games were on the PS1. The PS2 overshadowed it in terms of both sales and iconic games, but if you look through the PS1’s full catalogue you’ll realise that there are loads of games worth shouting about. So many of the first steps in long-running franchises happened on this console, while other franchises had some of their best entries of all time.

This was an extremely difficult list to put together, there are so many worthy games that just fell short like Tekken 3, Street Fighter Alpha 3, or plenty more we don’t have the time to name. What we can promise you is that these games are among the very best of all time.

Tomb Raider

After a decade of video games being defined by kid-friendly games like Mario in mainstream media, Tomb Raider came along and redefined what it meant to be an iconic video game character. Despite having a simple design, Lara Croft is one of the most well-known gaming characters of all time, thanks in no small part to teenage boys on the internet. That aside, it’s one of the best exploration games of all time – despite being mostly linear – and full of memorable moments.

Resident Evil 2

Survival horror was still immerging as a genre when the first Resident Evil came about, but Resident Evil 2 was the game that proved it wasn’t just a fad. Every element of that game is so memorable, people were looking at it with heartfelt nostalgia before RE3 was even out. The remake did a fantastic job of capturing this experience, but there’ll always be something special in the original.

Silent Hill

After Resident Evil set the standard for horror, many games tried and failed to live up to its reputation. Through all those false prophets, one light shone through the dense fog that saved processing power: Silent Hill. It strayed away from RE’s action focus to create something slower, tenser, and more terrifying than anything else on the market.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Any game that gets a genre named after them has got to be doing something right, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is far more deserving of that accolade than Rogue ever was. Read any “best games of all time” list and this will be on there somewhere. It looks beautiful, mixes exploration and action perfectly, and has one of the best secrets in gaming history; which ironically means everyone knows about it these days.

Final Fantasy VII

This game is so good that modern developers saw fit not only to remaster it but to completely rebuild it from the ground up to do it justice. At this point Final Fantasy 7 could be considered its own franchise apart from the main Final Fantasy games. Whether you played it as a kid or discovered it as an adult it made you sit up and pay attention to JRPGs in a way you may never have done before.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2

The Tony Hawk games have seen the highest highs and lowest lows over the decades, but this is still the game that captures its greatness the best. Skateboarding was all the rage in the 90s, and playing this game now throws you back to our simple and fun memories of that time.

Final Fantasy Tactics

The best Final Fantasy games are the ones that dare to step out of the series’ comfort zone, which is why Final Fantasy Tactics became such a successful spin-off series. With big tactical encounters – rather than endless random battles that are over in a flash – things move a lot slower but dive a lot deeper. It allows them to tell stories through the gameplay in a way static encounters can’t.

Metal Gear Solid

Circling back to iconic video game characters, Solid Snake will forever be up there. The 3D environments of this game felt revolutionary. Kojima was as much of a creative genius as ever, but he wasn’t so mad with power to put weird things like Monster Energy or Geoff Keighley in his games. It was a nice balance.
