10 Best Games on PlayStation Plus Premium

The new PlayStation Plus service contains hundreds of games from past PlayStation consoles. While there are some big hitters on the full list of games, they’re buried between a lot of niche games that you may never have heard of. It can be fun to explore these weird games, and it’s great that they haven’t been lost to history, but if you want to get your money’s worth out of this service, you need to know where the true gold is.

We’ve poured over the list of PlayStation Plus Premium games and have picked out a couple of the very best titles from each console that you should play, or maybe replay, once you get yourself a subscription.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (PS5)

One of the PS5’s launch titles, this sort of sequel to Insomniac’s fantastic Spider-Man game impressed just as much as its predecessor. Miles Morales is a character fans are desperate to see more of right now, so if you enjoyed the original, now is the perfect time to jump in and swing around New York once more, so you’re caught up on why everyone loves him so much.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (PS5)

The Assassin’s Creed series is virtually unrecognisable from what it was when it started almost 15 years ago, but that change has arguably been for the better. If you want a great RPG with a huge open world and an endless checklist of things to do, then you can’t go wrong with a Ubisoft game, and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the best available right now. As well as a stunningly beautiful depiction of Viking England, you’ve got all the brutal axe-swinging action you could want.

XCOM 2 (PS4)

Swinging your weapons about in open worlds is all well as good, but sometimes you want some slower strategy, and things don’t get more tactical than XCOM. These games make you engage so deeply with your soldiers that you’d do anything to keep them alive (including save-scumming, admit it, we’ve all done it). Whether you spend ages developing an iron-clad strategy or fly by the seat of your pants, you’re in for a thrill ride.

Celeste (PS4)

A game that could probably run on any PlayStation throughout history, Celeste earned its spot as the best platformer of a generation. It’s punishing but encouraging, and everything from the music, to the story, to the mechanics, pushes you to always get better and always get higher up the mountain. Speaking of the story, it’s a touching tale about living with anxiety, so there’s something in it for everyone.

Fallout: New Vegas (PS3)

With the PS3, we’ve hit the era where these games can reasonably be called ‘classics’, and Fallout: New Vegas is certainly worthy of sitting atop that pile. Whatever it is you like about Bethesda’s RPGs, New Vegas has some of it in store. The world is arguably the best the Fallout series has ever seen, and even if you got used to the relative polish of Fallout 4, it’s worth going back in time a bit for this one.

Red Dead Redemption (PS3)

The sequel is deserving of plenty of praise, but nothing quite tops the unique atmosphere of the original. There have been plenty of western games over the years, but none have come anywhere close to Red Dead Redemption’s dynamic world with a loveable protagonist and fantastic shooting.

Red Faction 2 (PS2)

Red Faction 2 is an underrated shooter from an era where shooters were on the rise. In a time when shooters like Battlefield 1942 and Medal of Honor: Allied Assault were getting browner and greyer, Red Faction dared to inject a bit of life into its world. Even if the sci-fi setting isn’t enough for you, the fact that your guns could take chunks out of almost every wall in the game certainly will be.

Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (PS2)

Somewhat overshadowed by their rivals, Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter has plenty of great games over this era, and it’s a shame they don’t have such a beloved place in platformer history these days. It didn’t exactly revolutionise the genre, but if you miss this era of great 3D platformers and you’ve never played this series, now is your chance.

Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee (PS1)

Do you like difficulty? Weird aliens? Mind control? Then your new favourite game is waiting all the back on the PS1. Take humble Abe on his odyssey to save his entire race from enslavement, in which he will get ground into a meat patty many times. Saving all of his friends isn’t as easy as it sounds either, as not only do they leap into danger with all the caution of a hyperactive lemming, but they’re hidden in ridiculously hard-to-find secret areas. This will test your intelligence, your dexterity, and your patience.

Worms Armageddon (PS1)

Little garden creatures with weird British accents blowing each other up with farm animals and UFOs.

Yup, that’ll do.
