LG counters Moto 360 round smartwatch, launching the circular G Watch R in Australia
THOUGHT Motorola was the only company to make a round smartwatch? LG today launches its own in Australia, complete with a dig at the Moto 360.
ROUND is the new black in smartwatches.
Just days after Motorola finally brought its round Moto 360 smartwatch to Australia, LG has countered with a circular gadget of its own.
The South Korean technology giant will today launch its LG G Watch R in local consumer electronics stores for $359, complete with a subtle dig at its well-rounded rival.
The G Watch R, LG’s second smartwatch, also runs the Google Android Wear software of its Motorola rival, but features a 1.3-inch Plastic OLED screen for added brightness.
In a dig at its rival’s “flat tyre” design that includes a black bar on the bottom of its round face, LG says its P-OLED screen “utilises 100 per cent of the screen surface”.
The company’s new smartwatch also packs in a heart-rate monitor, like the Moto 360, and adds a bezel edge with minute markers to appear more like a traditional wristwatch.
LG Electronics Australia marketing general manager Lambro Skropidis said the G Watch R was in a “whole new league” compared to its first smartwatch, released just four months ago.
“I also think it’ll take wearable devices to the next level,” Mr Skropidis said.
“The G Watch R will see wearable tech make the transition from fancy gadget to everyday companion device and on to genuine fashion statement.”
Leading smartwatch maker Samsung is also expected to weigh into the market before Christmas with its Samsung Gear S that features a 2-inch curved screen.
The Gear S is due to arrive in stores some time in November.
