AUSTRALIAN customers who bought a first-model iPad from an Apple Store or the company's website in the fortnight before it was superseded can claim a refund of up to $180.

Apple yesterday unveiled a new version of its popular tablet computer, cutting the price of first-generation models at the same time.

Before the announcement, a first model 16GB iPad with Wi-Fi cost Australian shoppers $629. Now it costs just $449.

Under Apple's retail policy, people who paid $629 in the two weeks before the announcement are entitled to a refund of the difference in price.

"Should Apple permanently reduce its price on any Apple-branded product within fourteen calendar days of the date of purchase, you may request a refund of the difference between the price paid and the current selling price," the company says.

To claim the refund, customers will have to provide a purchase receipt within two weeks of the date of the price reduction.
