The winners of the 13th annual iPhone Photography Awards have been announced.

The awards are independent of Apple and were started shortly after the launch of the iPhone by Kenan Aktulun.

Dozens of photographers from all around the world took part.

The grand prize went to UK photographer Dimpy Bhalotia for her photo of three boys leaping into the Ganges River in India.

Belarus shooter Artyom Baryshau, China’s Geli Zhao, and Iraqi Saif Hussain all placed in the photographer of the year category.

Three Australians also picked up awards.

Josephine Cafagna took out third place in the news and events category.

The Melbourne-based photographer’s iPhone X photo of a moody afternoon at the MCG impressed the judges and will tug at the heart strings of many Victorian’s now barred from their beloved colosseum.

“I find it therapeutic taking photographs,” Ms Cafagna said.

“The photo was taken on a typical cold Melbourne day as the sky over the MCG was constantly changing,” she said.

Canberra-born Anthony Ginns took second place in the travel category for his moody shot of a fellow train commuter at Katoomba, shot on his iPhone 7.

“I love to create images with a film noir feel to them,” he said.

“They are mysterious and play with shadows and end up looking like something out of a movie.”

Queenslander Glenn Hoffman took first place in the trees category and third place in the people category.

He’s been exclusively shooting photos on his iPhone for the best part of a decade and enjoys testing his creative limits against the challenges of mobile photography.

He took his winning entries using the iPhone 11 Pro, which placed a greater emphasis on photographic capabilities.

“I was immediately drawn to its Deep Fusion technology and it has meant I can be even more creative,” Mr Hoffman said.

“I have been playing around with low light and the detail iPhone 11 Pro captures is amazing.”

The competition entry requirements don’t put a time limit on photos available for entry, but the stipulation is that they have to have been taken on an iPhone or iPad, and can only be edited in apps on those devices.

Add-on lenses can also be used.

The full gallery of winning entries can be found on the IPPA website.
