Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra review: Elly Awesome on Harry Potter wand feature

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a unique feature that anyone who’s yearned for wizard school will fall completely in love with.

What would you say if I told you that you could control your phone with a magic wand? OK, fine, there’s no such thing as a magic wand but I’ve found something that’s pretty darn close. Meet the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra, one of Samsung’s latest and greatest, with one of its defining features being its stylus.

To dive straight in, the stylus is where it’s at. This has been the Samsung Galaxy Note’s trademark for almost 10 years. Which means Samsung has been refining their stylus, aka ‘S Pen’, technology for a very long time and this brings some really awesome features to an already powerful smartphone.

It’s not just your average stylus, this one is made to work seamlessly with the phone, so you can use your handwriting to take notes, write emails or even draw on your screen to create artwork or highlight words and content. The best part is the S Pen has a very natural feel when drawing, writing or gliding across the Note 20’s large 6.9” screen.

Barely any mainstream smartphones come with a stylus so using this device is a very different experience than most. I found it enhanced the way I navigated the phone, taking some of the clunkiness out of a touchscreen.

It’s also important to note, unlike a stand alone stylus, this one can be tucked away into the body of the frame. It clicks in securely, which is very satisfying, and if somehow you go to leave without it your phone will alert you that it’s missing.

Where things get magical are the wand-like features of the S Pen and if you grew up as a Harry Potter fan you’re going to love this. You can actually wave your stylus around in the air, performing different gestures to enact different features on your phone.

For example, you can scroll through Twitter without even touching the screen by flicking your S Pen in an upward motion mid-air, as you would scrolling with your finger. Or flick your S Pen down and across to go back a page when browsing the web, or to close an app.

This may sound frivolous and at first I thought it might just be a gimmick but once you get the feel for each gesture action you’ll be using your phone at 3x speed.

I also find it really handy to use the S Pen as a remote for taking photos on my phone. You can prop up your phone, walk 10 paces away and click the tiny button on the S Pen and take a photo of yourself. Look out, my Instagram feed is about to get next-level.

Although it’s disappointing that the Note 20 has some previous-generation cameras, across it’s front selfie camera and three back cameras, the quality of the photos the device produces are still astounding.

Additionally for the Note20, the heightened processing power and its larger form factor begins to blur the lines between laptop, tablet and phone. This makes it a really awesome multi-use device to be carrying around in your pocket, especially if you use your phone for work on the go.

For the magical experience you will have to fork out a hefty $1649 but I think it’s worth the premium price tag. This phone is refreshing and totally upped my productivity when working remotely. With it’s fast-charging huge 4500mAh battery, which lasts a full day and more, you could be conjuring up work, life and play at lightning speeds.
