FROM a new GPS for the car to a jumping robot that can do tricks, here are five great gadgets that your dad could love.

Navman MY600LMT

4/5

This car GPS with a 5-inch screen is loaded with features to ease the burden of driving, including driver alerts, traffic updates and large graphics showing what lane to take when lanes merge. It has both intuitive menus and voice destination entry, and the traffic warnings can be handy, although you must learn to cope with the constant beeping of upcoming hazards. The Landmark Guidance Plus function, that prompts directions using landmarks, is handy, as are the monthly map updates and Bluetooth.

Kaiser Bass Photo and Negative Scanner

3.5/5

This two-in-one scanner sets simplifies the process of turning old negatives and prints into a digital file. You can connect it to a computer but it’s easier just to pop an SD card into the back and scan directly to that. It will scan negatives at 1200 DPI but the only way it can digitise family slides is if you pop them out of the slide frame — which isn’t an attractive option. This ranks highly for ease of use. Line up your negative or print and it starts scanning. It could be a handy present for a dad who has always loved photography.

Parrot Jumping Sumo

4.5/5

Why would dad want a drone that zooms around and jumps on command? Why wouldn’t he? You control this cool little fellow with a smartphone or tablet, and get a drone-eye view of the world as it zooms around at up to 7km/h and performing spins on command. You can create and save choreographed routines. Hit a button and it jumps up to 80cm high. Easy to use and a huge pile of fun.

Marshall Major Headphones

3/5

There are few better reasons for dad to use the phrase “turn it up to 11” than a pair of Marshall-branded headphones. The famous speaker brand is behind these Major headphones that sit on top of ears and feature plenty of cute aesthetic touches. The square ear cups resemble speakers, and the gold-coloured jack resembles something you’d plug into a quad box. Unfortunately, its build quality is lacking for the price.

Panasonic W850

3.5/5

Fresh dads are the target of this video camera that not only records full HD footage but can also record the person behind the camera and pull double-duty as a baby monitor. The W850 camcorder records video and six-megapixel photos to an SD memory card and, using Twin Camera mode and a tiny, spinning camera on the viewfinder’s side, records reactions from the photographer. It can also be used remotely, to send crying baby alerts to smartphones, though it won’t record 4K video and costs a lot more to buy in Australia than in the US.
