Samsung Galaxy S20: Where to get the new flagship smartphone

Here are all the deals, plans and pricing for Samsung’s latest flagship phone, where you can get it and when it will be available.

A brief history of the mobile phone

Samsung announced its latest flagship smartphones at a special event in San Francisco on Wednesday morning, unveiling three new variants in its Galaxy S range as well as a crazy folding phone.

While we still don’t know exactly when the Galaxy Z Flip foldable will hit Australian stores (or how much it will cost when it does, but expect a price north of $2000), the Galaxy S20 will go on sale on March 6.

Pre-orders are open however, and if you’ve already made your mind up about getting Samsung’s new device, there are benefits to pre-ordering.

If you place an order through Samsung, Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys, Officeworks, Bing Lee, Radio Rentals, Woolworths, Amazon, the Qantas Q Store or the Microsoft store by midnight on March 5 you can also get a pair of the new Galaxy Buds+ for free. (They’re priced at $299.)

If you already have a Samsung phone and are looking to upgrade you can also save up to $350 by trading it in.

Download the Samsung Trade Up app from the Google Play store to see how much you can save, though it will likely be less than you can get if you make the effort to sell your old phone yourself.

Phones have become increasingly expensive in recent years, now regularly costing north of $1000 thanks to a number of factors including the weaker Australian dollar.

The Galaxy S20 is no exception, starting at $1349 and going up to $2249 for the 512GB S20 Ultra.

If you don’t want to fork out that much in one hit, you can spread the payment out with monthly instalments.

Obviously you can do this through your telco, but if you want to avoid pricier plans in order to take advantage of better value SIM-only deals from the big three telcos or the more aggressive mobile virtual network operators like Boost, Vaya or Amaysim, you can take a payment plan through Samsung as well.

If you go down this route, be forewarned that making only the minimum monthly repayments won’t pay off your phone before the interest-free period ends, at which point it jumps to a staggering 24.99 per cent.

If you want to avoid that you can go with a plan from a telco like Telstra, Optus or Vodafone.

TELSTRA

The big T is offering consumers and small business customers a limited time upgrade to the S20+ 5G for the price of the S20 5G in a push to get more people on the new network.

But if you get on Telstra’s 5G network it will cost you more later. From July 1 the faster network is an extra $15 per month.

You can get the upgrade if you order a phone on a month-to-month plan before April 3.

It will also get you 80,000 Telstra Plus points, if that’s your sort of thing.

You can buy the phone outright or through monthly repayments over two or three years.

OPTUS

Optus doesn’t appear to be selling the 4G variant of the S20 and is instead pushing plan customers on to the 5G models so they can see the benefits of the new network being rolled out around Australia.

It’s selling the S20 5G starting from $85.06 on a 36-month plan with 60GB of included data.

The S20+ 5G 128GB is $89.24 per month over 36 months.

The S20 Ultra with its 100X zoom camera and massive 6.9-inch screen is $104.52 per month over 36 months.

Optus’s $49-a-month plan gives you 60GB of data a month (which can be shared with other eligible Optus plans), unlimited talk and text, unlimited international calls to 35 select nations, and access to Optus Sport with UEFA and EPL games live if you’re a soccer fan.

VODAFONE

Vodafone was late to the 5G party but has now begun rolling out its 5G network.

In the interest of attracting customers, it’s offering the 5G S20 and S20+ phones for the price of the 4G phones on its 24 and 36-month plans.

You also get Vodafone’s famous $5-a-day roaming which is handy for frequent overseas travellers.

Vodafone also gives you unlimited data but of course there’s a catch – once you go above your cap it’s throttled to a barely usable 1.5Mbps.

You also have a choice of 12, 24, and 36-month plans.

The below prices are for the introductory $40 plan with 7GB of data, but Vodafone goes up in $10 increments up to $80 a month with 150GB of data.

WOOLWORTHS

Woolworths (and its rival Coles) are multi-headed organisations that do a lot more than just sell you groceries.

One of those things is Woolworths Mobile, an MVNO that uses the Telstra wholesale network (Boost is the only MVNO allowed to use the full Telstra network, but if you live in a metropolitan area you’ll be largely fine on the wholesale one).

Woolworths is offering probably the best deal at the moment, and will give you $250 off if you sign up to one of its plans (or if you’re on it already).

It will also give you 10 per cent off your groceries once per month for the life of your plan.
