GOPRO has unveiled its highly anticipated drone device as the company strengthens its push to become a platform for modern-day storytelling.

The popular adventure sports camera producer showed off its new Karma drone equipped with its latest camera to allow users to achieve spectacular shots from above.

Drone photography has become increasingly more popular with the advent of commercially available drones and GoPro founder and chief executive Nick Woodman showed off the much anticipated product during an event in California overnight.

He also spruiked the new Hero5 cameras and a new cloud-based service for storing, editing and sharing video.

“We want to help you all become great storytellers,” Mr Woodman said after making a rock star entrance at the media event. “We transformed GoPro into an end-to-end storytelling solution.”

The folding drone comes in a backpack and features a removable stabiliser which users can clip any model GoPro into it.

When flying it’s controlled by a game console-style controller with two joysticks and a built-in touchscreen.

The portable drone system won’t be available until October 23 but when it does retail, it will cost Australians $1195.95 without a camera or $1649.95 with a new GoPro attached.

The Karma drone boasts a maximum speed of 54km/h. It has a range of one kilometre and 20 minutes of flight time per charge.

GoPro’s much anticipated entry into the drone market comes as the California-based company strives to distinguish itself in an increasingly competitive market for mini-cameras that can be used to capture adventures or sports from personal perspectives.

Following the event GoPro shares rose as much as 6.3 per cent in early trading.

The new Hero5 Black and Hero5 Session cameras, which boast features such as voice control, ultra-high-definition image quality and are waterproof down to 10 metres without an external case will be available on October 2.

The Hero5 will retail at $569.95 in Australia.
