THIS year Android tablets have taken market share from those running Apple's iOS operating system for the first time.

Tablets have soared in popularity this Christmas, but Apple's iPad may no longer be leading the gift list, according to The Daily Mail.

Although the iPad is still the most popular device in Britain with 38 per cent of the market, 56 per cent of tablets now run on the Android operating system - beating out Apple's iOS.

In Britain, tablet sales tripled in 2013, with 7.6 million units shipped across the country in the first three quarters of the year - with a 192 per cent rise in the number shipped between January and September.

Cheaper models such as Nexus, Kindle Fire and Samsung Galaxy are credited with helping the drive towards Android.

With the future looking cheaper for consumers purchasing tablets, budget devices are set to shake the market up and become even more common, an analyst told The Daily Mail.
