A stitch in time: this body scanner can fit a suit in seconds

SUIT you, sir. This high-tech, walk-in capsule can make a made-to-measure suit without the need of a tailor or those awkward inside leg measurements.

The scanner will pick up body mass index as well as detailed measurements of your limbs.

A new partnership between two Sydney startups will let men shopping for a tailored suit have their measurements taken by walk-in 3D body scanners.

The scanners, which creator mPort is rolling out in shopping centres around the country, will send their measurements to online tailoring company InStitchu.

Customers can then log on and order their customised suit, choosing from a range of fabrics, buttons, cuts and colours. They’re made in China and are delivered direct to buyers within a month.

Currently, customers looking to order a tailored suit with InStitchu are encouraged to take their own measurements by following instructions on the website.

Alternatively, they can make an appointment to be measured at InStitchu’s showroom for $30.

Co-founder Robin McGowan said while the self-measurement tool had been well received, “there are still a lot of men out there hesitant about measuring up on their own”.

The scanner will pick up body mass index as well as detailed measurements of your limbs.

“The 3D body scanning technology from mPort is just what they need to gain the confidence to purchase tailored suits online.” The first compatible mPort scanner is operational at World Square shopping centre in central Sydney. Others will soon roll out elsewhere, InStitchu says.

A customer’s first mPort scan, which will also quantify body mass index, body fat percentage and the circumference of areas including the biceps, chest and thighs, is free.

Thereafter, once-yearly scans cost $15. Three can be bought for $40, six for $70 and 12 for $120.
