Dog & Bone Wetsuit for iPhone 6
Dog & Bone / 3.5/5 / $89.95 / dogandbonecases.com
This phone cover from an Australian company is the first to market with a waterproof case for the iPhone 6 that doesn’t add a layer over the top of the touch screen. The case has a rubber layer that keeps out the water and a tough outer shell to protect it against knocks. The design for this is a notable change from previous Dog & Bone cases, with a welcome addition being a rubberised back that makes it less likely to drop the phone when it’s wet. If you’re planning to get more active this year, this case could be what you need to keep your smartphone safe.
Garmin Vivosmart
Garmin / 4.5/5 / $199 / garmin.com.au
With a hidden OLED touch screen that displays notifications, this activity tracker does a lot more than just count your steps. There is the option of a colour trim to personalise the otherwise black minimalist look. Pair it with a smartphone and it will vibrate and display notifications such as texts, emails and calendar reminders. Touch the screen for time, steps, distance and calories. It has a vibrate alarm, is water resistant for showering and swimming and has a rechargeable battery that lasts up to a week. The smart features make this a truly handy wearable device.
Jawbone Up Move
Jawbone / 4/5 / $69 / jawbone.com
Jawbone’s cheapest and most basic activity tracker could be the solution if you’re on the fence about fitness trackers. This bottle cap-sized gadget weighs only 6.8g but it can track your steps, estimate your calories burned, and transmit the information to a Google or Apple smartphone connected to it by Bluetooth. The Up Move is powered by a coin battery that promises six months of use, and clips on to clothing for constant wear. If you want to use its sleep tracking feature, however, you’ll need to invest in a band that comes in a three-pack for $39.
Fitbit Charge
Fitbit / 4/5 / $149.95 / fitbit.com
Fitbit is back to claim your wrist with its freshly released Charge, a replacement for the recalled Force model and one that offers extra smarts. Unlike other Fitbit exercise trackers, the Charge delivers basic call notifications from a connected Apple or Google smartphone, in addition to tracking the user’s steps, calories burned, floors climbed, and distance travelled. The new model also offers automatic sleep-tracking for the first time, and shows a user’s progress on its bright but basic OLED display. Advanced users may want to wait until next year for the Charge HR, that adds a heart-rate sensor for $30, but this water-resistant activity tracker is comfortable and reliable.
Striiv Fusion
Striiv / 3.5/5 / $149 / striiv.com
Pitching at those who want to count their pennies along with their steps, this activity tracker ticks off most of the features you want without the price of some. It tracks steps and sleep, has a seven-day battery life, links to iOS and Google Android apps, has a touchscreen, is water resistant and comes with a choice of band colours. It also does some notifications (calls, texts, reminders) although we found that feature a little flaky.
