Facebook has experimented with a 'Sympathise' button, company engineers say

AND no, it's not that dislike button everyone's been longing for. This potential new feature expresses a much more complicated emotion.

SO YOUR friend wrote a gloomy Facebook post about a death or a breakup and you "Liked" it.

It's a modern day dilemma - not exactly the feeling you wanted to express, but close enough and much simpler than stringing together whole sentences.

That may be over soon because according to reports the social network is working on a crafty solution - a "sympathise" button.

A company engineer told The Huffington Post that while it's by no means official, Facebook experimented with the idea at a company hackathon "a while back", said company engineer Dan Muriello.

"It would be, 'five people sympathise with this,' instead of 'five people 'like' this,'" Mr Muriello. said.

"Which of course a lot of people were - and still are - very excited about. But we made a decision that it was not exactly the right time to launch that product. Yet."

Many of the site's signature features, including Facebook chat, the friend suggester and Timeline profile pages have emerged from previous hackathons.
