LATHER on the sunscreen and turn the aircon on full blast because it’s going to be pretty warm for the next few days at least.

Hot weather is sweeping most of the country with Hobart the only capital which won’t get above 30C this week.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting a hot one for most our capitals but senior meteorologist John Turnbull said the balmy conditions are unlikely to stick around for too long.

Mr Turnbull said the high temperatures were part of a normal summer pattern with a cooler change set to bring the mercury back down to more tolerable levels by Wednesday and Thursday.

“A high pressure system is drawing hot air and strong winds,” he said.

“But a cool change will move across South Australia, NSW and Victoria in coming days.”

That might be little consolation for those in Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne who will cop the worst of the hot conditions in the meantime.

Here’s what’s in store for your state.

NSW/ACT

Sydney residents will enjoy a milder 28C today before the heat well and truly kicks in tomorrow.

Sydney’s CBD is predicted to hit 35C tomorrow, while the western suburbs will cop temperatures closer to 40 right up until Wednesday evening with storms predicted.

The mercury will hover around 23C by Thursday with much cooler conditions leading into the weekend.

For those living in the nation’s capital, temperatures will hover around 30C in Canberra until at least Thursday when it will be a cooler 21C.

VICTORIA

Melbourne CBD is tipped to hit 30C today and at least 34C tomorrow.

A late shower will make its way across parts of the state brining cooler conditions from Wednesday.

The city can expect a high of just 20C on Wednesday and a chilly low of 12C on Thursday.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

The city of churches will be turned into a city of sweat as temperatures reach a high of 36C today.

Tomorrow won’t be much cooler with a high of 35C hitting the CBD.

Possible showers on Wednesday and Thursday will bring a much cooler 24C and some relief from the heat.

QUEENSLAND

The sunshine state which has suffered a heatwave in recent days isn’t going to get too much of a break this week.

Brisbane will hit a top of 28C and 29C today and tomorrow before hitting 30C on Wednesday and 32C on Thursday.

The heat will stick around in the tropics with Townsville hitting highs of 31-32C over the next few days with showers and storms predicted.

Cairns will hit a high of 32C today through until Thursday but as usual for this time of year in the far north, showers are unlikely to bring much reprieve from the heat.

TASMANIA

Our southern most state is perhaps unsurprisingly the only one to have a capital not to hit the 30s this week.

Hobart is due to a hit a high of 22C today and 28 tomorrow.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Perth will hit a high of just 23C today, 25C tomorrow and 28C by Wednesday.

Thursday will bring the hottest temperatures with the CBD set for a predicted 31C.

Further north it’s a lot hotter with Broome predicted to hit highs of 35C until at least Thursday.

NORTHERN TERRITORY

If the rest of the country thinks it’s hot already, spare a thought for those living in Darwin and Alice Springs.

Temperatures in Darwin will hit highs of at least 33C (and very humid) over the next few days while Alice Springs will hit 36-38C.

Ahhh ... summer time fun. Well, we could all move to Siberia, where they’ve closed the schools because it’s hit minus 45. I think we’ll stick with a few hot days.
