Spare a kind thought for Queenslanders who have today woken up to one of their coldest mornings in years.

Several regions in Queensland are shivering through negative temperatures as an airflow is pushed across the state.

Warwick in the state’s southeast was the coldest town this morning, with residents waking up to an icy -2C just before 6am.

Kingaroy is experiencing its third morning in a row of negative temperatures, with a frosty -1.9C recorded at 5am.

Most of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt region also dropped into subzero territory, recording -1.9C at Wellcamp Airport, -0.7C at Oakey and -1.1C at Applethorpe.

Brisbane was forecast to dip down to a minimum of just 6C, which would have been the city’s coldest morning in two years, but hit lows of a slightly warmer 10C.

The river city recorded its coldest morning for 2020 on Tuesday, when the mercury dropped to 9.1C.

Things are a bit more sunny on the Gold Coast, with lows of 12C and tops of 20C expected later today.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Peter Markworth said the frosty mornings are due to dry winds sweeping across the state.

“There’s an airflow being pushed right across Queensland, covering it like a big blanket of dry air,” he said. “Temperatures could still go down, Kingaroy got lower than its previous record yesterday with -1C.”

But don’t get too rugged up – the state’s southeast is expected to warm up to 22C by this afternoon.

It’s not just Queenslanders who are freezing, with several Aussie states waking to icy temperatures this morning.

Sydney will be cool but sunny today, with tops of 19C and a low of 9C. The rest of the week will be mostly sunny with a chance of some showers on Friday.

It was extra chilly in Canberra this morning, with people waking up to lows of -1C. The nation’s capital is expected to reach tops of just 13C today.

Melbourne will see a low of 9C and tops of 17C today, with a strong wind warning today and tomorrow for the west, central and East Gippsland coasts.

Residents can expect some cold nights over the weekend with temperatures expected to drop as low as 3C on Saturday and Sunday.

Adelaide can expect tops of 16C today and a drop to 6C tonight, and tops of just 14C tomorrow.

Darwin will be sunny, climbing from a low of 21 to a high of 32, with sunny, mild-to-warm weather in Arnhem.

Perth faced a chilly minimum of 7C this morning, with tops of 19C and 20C forecast for today and tomorrow, followed by a rainy few days.

Hobart, which has already suffered a wet few days, will experience the same gloomy weather with temperatures expected to drop to 5C by Friday.
