‘Truck driving past’: Kiwis mock Queenslanders after 2.9 magnitude earthquake
New Zealanders have taken to social media to stir Australians’ reactions to what was considered a “minor” earthquake in Queensland.
New Zealanders have taken to social media to mock Australians who were “shook” by the low magnitude earthquake that was recorded in south east Queensland on Tuesday.
The magnitude 2.9 earthquake, which was reported in the Morteon Bay region by Geoscience Australia, was likened to a “truck going past here in NZ” by one Kiwi on social media.
“Wait till they get a 7 (magnitude) then they’ll know what an earthquake feels like,” one user wrote.
“That’s only a baby shake compared with what we have in New Zealand,” another user wrote.
Another New Zealander said they were used to a bit more “theatrics from larger magnitudes”.
“Plenty of strong wind but being a kiwi living here, 3.0 on the scale is nothing and would hardly be felt,” they wrote.
The earthquake hit Brendale, just north of Brisbane, with a depth of 10km about 1.30pm Tuesday.
More than 700 residents in suburbs across the region reported “loud bangs” and tremors from what they thought was strong winds at the time.
“Felt this in Ipswich. Thought it was my house about to take off in the wind,” one user wrote.
“Felt it in Highvale. Loud bang sounded like something large landed inside the house. Neighbours were all out on the street checking their properties too,” another user wrote.

The category three earthquake, which was previously reported at a 3.o magnitude, was considered minor and unlikely to cause damage.
The tremors follow after a 6.2 magnitude earthquake was felt by more than 550 residents in the Northern Territory last Friday.
The earthquake, which originated in Timor Leste, shook residents who described the event “like a truck load of boulder rocks being dropped off outside our house”.
