Sydney weather: Unwelcome weekend news for already drenched east coast

After a horror week of record rainfall, the east coast of Australia will get a reprieve this weekend. But it’s not all good news.

Weather To Watch

After a week of turbulent weather along the east coast, this weekend is set to bring a welcome reprieve from the thunderstorms, severe rains and gale-force winds.

While showers have been forecasted for several cities along the east coast, the precipitation is likely to be less than 5mm in most areas.

There’s also welcome news for residents in Western Australian. After battling Friday’s 39C weather, temperatures are set to dramatically drop to below 30 by Saturday.

Unwelcome news for damp Sydneysiders

Thursday’s rare burst of sun could taper off by Friday, with a 30 per cent chance of showers. Sydneysiders trying to dry out their homes can expect a partly cloudy weekend with medium chance of light showers. However, precipitation is expected to be within 1mm to 5mm

A shower or two are also predicted for the flood-drenched towns of Lismore and Ballina, with highs in the mid-20s and lows of 16C to 19C.

Slow-moving storms are expected to hit western NSW towns and up into southwest Queensland, from Saturday to Sunday. Sky News Chief Meteorologist, Tom Saunders warned this could lead to chances of “flash flooding and damaging winds”.

Forecasts of rain will ease further down south and closer to the ACT. The nation’s capital is in store for a partly cloud but otherwise dry weekend, with the temperature set to creep into the mid-20s on both days.

Rain to ease for Queensland

Friday’s thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and damaging winds are expected to ease throughout the weekend.

Residents in Brisbane are in for a partly cloudy weekend with just a slight chance of rain on both days. The temperature is also predicted to remain between 20C to 27C.

Showers are more likely further up north. In Cairns, both days carry high changes of showers, with a chance of a thunderstorm tipped for Sunday.

Storms are also predicted for Australia’s Top End. Showers could eventuate into possible storms on Saturday and Sunday in Darwin, however rainfall levels are predicted to peak above 6mm on either day.

Temperatures are expected to hit between 25C to 33C on Saturday and 26C and 33C on Sunday.

Mercury drops for Victoria

Victorian residents will get an early taste for the cooler days autumn and winter will bring. Temperatures in Melbourne could drop to just 12C on Saturday and 14C on Sunday, with highs of 24C and 28C. Possible showers could also be in store for Sunday, with a slight chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon.

Tasmanians can also expect a cool but mostly sunny weekend. A low of 10C and 11C, and highs of 23C are predicted for both days, however there is zero per cent change of rain forecasted.

In Adelaide, temperatures are set to continue to rise across the weekend. Idyllic sunny skies are in store for both Saturday and Sunday, with highs of 29C and 32C and moderate lows of 15C and 18C.

Major drop in heat for WA

After a blistering week with temperatures in the mid to high 30s, Perth residents can look forward to a massive drop in heat.

Thursday’s high of 39C will give way to much more moderate days of 20C to 29C on Saturday and 18C to 28C on Sunday.
